Without things like “New Years” it’s easy to lose track of our lives amidst the busy-ness of every day things. And for many people the best use of milestones like “new years” is to use it as a RESET point. To say “from THIS day forward… I will not do — and I will begin to do –.” The American tradition does this through New Year’s Resolutions… The Hebrew tradition was to start the new year (Rosh Hashana) with ten days of repentance. They both have the same idea: there’s stuff in me that needs to change, and this is the time to do it, a fresh start… And I think this is the right idea: so I’d like to encourage you (and me) not to waste this. Don’t waste 2012 as an opportunity to reset your life, reset your relationships, reset how you think and act, and your priorities… Here’s your chance to make a change! If you are ready for that – let’s start it right – together Sunday morning 11:11. See you!

We got FOUR parts to our worship today. So as you go, you can click on each link and go through the steps, or read through everything first, whatever works for you:

Step 1 – Connect. We want to dedicate this day to God, and do whatever we need to “connect.” That is, to get our hearts (the core of our minds) to focus on God for a change… Normally we sing songs or listen to a Bible reading and use the words to help do this – today it’s DIY, and that’s often better because you can tailor it to what YOU need in order to CONNECT.

Step 2 – Look. We want to look at a Bible passage and read it thoroughly. This isn’t about analysis so much as observation and understanding. Before you can know what something “means for you” you have to see clearly what is being said. To understand on the important surface level… The better we do this – the more insightful Step 3 becomes!

Step 3 – Listen. We want to allow God to speak to us through His Word (i.e., that Bible passage), by asking some simple questions… Take your time with this step – this requires a lot of patience and open-mindedness. It’s also where we see the difference between “smart” people and “wise” people. Smart people come up with wrong answers that seem very knowledgeable. But wise people touch on true things God is trying to say… [As for me, I'd rather be dumb and right, than smart and wrong...]

Step 4 – Share. Pretty self explanatory there… It’s the best part of our Sunday meetings – it’s the best part of our church blog (when people comment) – and so we cannot leave this out!

Check in. Say hello. Share what you’ve learned…

You know what to do. Ready? Set. Go!

Everything worth-doing requires some preparation. You don’t just get up and go to college, you get into a school, and pack your things… You don’t just have a birthday party and hope people just show up, you plan for it… At work, you don’t just go and make a decision for a multi-national corporation, you do the research and do an analysis first… Even just going out on a date – if the person means nothing to you, you can get up and go as you are…but if the person is worth-seeing, then you take some time to get ready. Because everything worth-doing requires some preparation, and worship is no different. It takes work to free up a day to worship. So for tomorrow, free up a couple of hours in the morning for a “worship time.” The whole day will be worship – but you’ll be free to do other things too – so set aside a couple of hours for quality time with God by yourself, or with your spouse or family or roommate… And check back here when you’re ready. We’ll pray and read the Bible, but we’ll have a step-by-step that w can do together… And let me just add: If you take God seriously – take worship seriously… My inner mantra is: take God seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously… But sin makes us do just the opposite.

See you back here tomorrow morning!

Here’s the plan for Sunday August 28th, 2011: I want you to join me (from wherever you are this weekend) in one day of worship. Many people think of worship as something you do because you go to church; or think of it as a “part” of church. I want to turn that around… Jesus talked about God wanting “true worshippers who worship in spirit and truth” – so instead of being people who “take part in worship because you go to church”, I’d like all of us to become people who WORSHIP… and starting next week, take part in Church because we are Worshipers!

“How can I take part?” Here’s what you do:

1. Get busy tomorrow (Saturday) so that you have plenty of free time on Sunday. Run all your errands, talk to all your friends, do all your laundry, and get plenty of sleep.

2. Then on Sunday get up, set aside 2-3 hours of quality time either by yourself, or with your spouse or roommate(s) or family.

3. Then check back here Sunday morning for what we’re doing… Nothing out of the ordinary: praying, reading the Bible, and sharing… And we can share what we did and what we learned HERE.

Last Sunday in Central Park was a real treat! But in this weather, the only thing better is air conditioning, comfortable sofas and good iced coffee (and tea). So this Sunday we’ll be meeting at Fete Coffee, just a few blocks over from Union Square: on 3rd Ave (and 20th Street). So think of it as just another treat God throws our way… Inside pic and sermon topic after the jump…

We’re starting a new mini-topic (on the book of Genesis) this week called “the Gospel of Moses.” The Bible is the most brilliant book ever. EVER. Not because it was written by brilliant people (although some of the Bible authors are brilliant, and others just regular schmoes) – but because it gives us accounts and messages from a brilliant creator, a redeeming and finishing God. So you won’t want to miss this!

How do I get there?

From Union Square, head over to 20th Street, and then head east to Third Ave… The address is 247 3rd Avenue (click for Google Maps…like you need it). And if you need help you can always call or text our (Google Voice) “church line” at (347) 565-5365.

Just one thing! Unlike our usual space, we won’t have this space all day… So please keep track of time!! See you at 11:11 sharp!

There’s an old hymn (we sing it from time to time on Sundays) with the line, “let your goodness like a fetter bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love!” Most of the people I know would never cheat on their spouses, betray good friends, or even betray their work partners… but when it comes to God, there’s something in us that makes us good at leaving Him. Often the test of someone who’s really started following Jesus is that they know this about themselves… Most people think they’re good – so they think they’d be faithful – but we know we’re not good (we’re bent, sinful), so we wander… And some times we get into a full blown gallop going in the wrong direction. That’s why the picture of God in the Bible is as a Shepherd going after lost sheep…

The main business of the Christian life, then – is to keep track of one’s own wandering heart – and to bring it back when it wanders away. For the next few weeks leading up to Easter, our topic is “Putting God First” – how to put God first, why we put God first, what it means to put God first, etc…

To be a Jesus follower means HE is at the front, and we follow Him – and yet in real life we often wind up following other things. So how can we put God back in his rightful place, front and center? Come and see…

If you’re looking for the section of the site with audio recordings, there isn’t one. But…we do sometimes put links to recordings as part of a blog post, and more recently, on the CF Facebook page. Why only some of them? If you want to listen to good preaching, there are better places to look than here…so scat! And if you want that special something that God’s been giving to CityFellowship, the only way to get that is to come join in our family, hang around, talk, play Wii, pray… an mp3 just won’t do…

Then why do we post any audio recordings? Sometimes there’s a topic we go into in-depth, and we want everyone to be able to get on the same page. Sometimes there’s a series or part of a series, so I want to make sure everyone can get part 1 if I’m going to talk about part 2 on Sunday. It’s NOT because I think the sermons are anything special – they’re not – but God’s message is always AMAZING, and so I do my best (under the circumstances) to bring that message to light in whatever way I can.

If you listen to the recordings but haven’t been with us on a Sunday, there’s often noise and distractions – people walking in late (what’s the deal with that anyway?), cars honking, things going on – that we try to minimize, but gets through. This makes for a more repetitive talk, as I try to keep everyone on the same page – so forgive me for that! Also forgive me for the dumb impromptu things I say – instead, I pray that you would focus on the main message, which is God’s message for you…
