There are lots of people around here who aspire to greatness of some sort. We’re made for greatness of some sort, so perhaps we’re sensing that deep down… Now if the deep story of the universe is as Herbert Spencer said, “survival of the fittest”, then you must fight and claim your greatness through your superior adaptability to your environment; greatness cannot happen by accident. Like a self involved starlet you must hit the gym three hours a day, hone your media skills, connect with the right people (or do these things metaphorically – to fit your particular version of greatness).
But if the deep story of the universe is that God has a great plan for you – greater than you even have for yourself… then the way to greatness is simply to follow his lead. Like the Karate Kid waxing cars or sanding wood floors, you will wind up getting ability and position and greatness without directly seeking it. Like firemen who wind up buff because they want to save lives, or a race car driver who learned to drive fast because he spent years making deliveries in the snow, or a famous writer who just wanted to write a bedtime story for his niece…
IF God has great plans for you, THEN the way to real greatness is not by seeking greatness – but by following His lead… Loving God, serving people, doing good work, being humble. In the end, that’s the only real way to greatness. Women: would you rather a guy with a great physique because he’s so vain to eat like a pig every day then work out for hours? Or would you rather meet a guy with a great physique who got that way by doing hard work and helping people? And guys, which guy would you rather be? And although I’m using the example of physical appearance, I’m really talking about intellect and ability and status and everything we want to make our mark with. Real greatness comes in the form of humble people doing good, following God’s lead, serving people.
