Just the way every Jesus-person ought to be wise, and yet some people have a spiritual gift of “wisdom” – everyone following Jesus needs faith, but some people have a particular gift. Using the body metaphor, I can actually pick up a pen from the ground with my toes, I can even write (or make marks) with it… But my hand is particularly good at this in a way my toes are not. There are some people who have a particular spiritual gift of “faith.” So what is that exactly?
Eugene Peterson calls this the gift of “simple trust (in God).” But we shouldn’t confuse the word “simple” with the idea of “Easy.” There’s nothing easy about simple trust…especially when it comes to God… When other people are ready to compromise, change course, those with the gift of faith remain on course. When normal people get scared or greedy and compromise, the SG of faith lets someone be at perfect ease trusting God. People with this gift have an inner compass that helps them stay oriented toward God.
So when all Jesus’ disciples left, Mary stayed, and so did John. They just trusted Jesus enough to think “wherever He is, that’s where I need to be. Even if it’s at the foot of the cross.” When the sh*t hits the fan, these are the people you need to look to. When no one knows what to do, these are the people who actually know. Especially those with leadership gifts and teaching gifts need to find and rely on those with the gift of faith – otherwise all the smart people will sell out in the name of practicality, and the passionate people will get out and burn out in the name of purity, but to those who will honor the Body, the SG faith people will point the way – so it’s up to us to take notice and follow.
