Good news about gossip…

Most people don’t learn the important things in life through a class or a book…instead you get it through what I’m going to call “gossip.” So when did you first learn about kissing? In a class? How about dating or what kind of person you should want to marry? How about things like: how to spend your free time? Or even (slightly) more important things, like who to vote for in the next election? Whether you should bother to vote at all? Most people don’t learn these things through books or lectures – you get it through the stuff your friends say. They don’t sit down and try to convince you of something, they just say stuff and you hear them – sometimes you totally disagree… but it adds up over time to create a culture, a life, a worldview…
This is also the way, the only way, many people will ever really learn about the Jesus life. Not preachy church-lady advice, but real gossip about a real Jesus who really matters and does things to you. If you are someone who can’t learn important things about life through books or lectures, then the only way you’ll ever really deal with Jesus things is through a bunch of friends who gossip about Jesus. How you date, what you do, how you think of money, how you use your money, what you did this week – your spiritual gifts, things you’re learning about Jesus… these are all gossip worthy if you knew how.
Now everyone gossips a little bit, but some people are really good at it… For others it might even be a spiritual gift. So if that’s you, go ahead and lead the way!
