Focus on personal growth…

How would I know if I needed to do some growing up? Let’s say: “I’m smart, I’m good at things, I’m talented, I have friends and people like me, some people even look up to me…” The question I’d need to ask myself is how back and forth am I? There’s a part in Ephesians 4:14 that talks about spiritual immaturity as being “tossed to and fro…” back and forth. Are you hot one day and cold the next? Are you driven in your work, proud one day and depressed another? Or are you steady?
Paradoxically some of the most gifted people wind up going through life spiritually and emotionally immature. They’re gifted enough that they can cope, and excel even though they are a train wreck waiting to happen. But getting by is different from thriving and really doing well in life. So ask yourself if growing up is something you need to focus on right now… and get to it. Stop telling yourself “this is just the way you are.” It may be the way you are right now, but it’s not the way you have to be.
