Your ghetto b-school reading list…

There was a time in history when Christians led the way in terms of business and commerce in Manhattan (thanks to Dutch settlers – we mentioned on Sunday)… Now my Masters degree is in Divinity, not Business, so all I can really tell you is the theological component: That is, all work is a part of, and extension of “love your neighbor.” In your work life, you serve God by serving people, giving them something of value (whether you perform a service or enlighten, or entertain – all in constructive ways). And like I said, I’m not really qualified to tell you anything more than that about your work, your career, your business… But I do know of a few people who are qualified to tell you quite a bit more – and I think you need to hear them out.
There’s a whole lot of great business literature out there…let me just list three that I think these ought to be mandatory for every believer interested in business…and mandatory reading for anyone even thinking of b-school.
- Jim Collins, Good to Great
- Dan Pink, A Whole New Mind
- Seth Godin, Linchpin
None of these authors are Christian, or share my theological values (that I know of), but nevertheless they teach us a lot about what work and business could be…in a world in which God has gifted and placed you to serve in useful and unique ways…
