My dumb valentines post

Disclaimer, the following are Leo’s personal thoughts and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of God, the Church universal, CityFellowship, or even the cat or monkey… Let me start by saying I’m not a fan of Valentine’s day – and here’s why: First, I think it tends to make some single people feel inadequate as though there’s something wrong with being single… Some of the greatest and most fulfilled people in history were single at the time. Wouldn’t it suck if someone like Joan of Arc, (or Daniel in the Bible) was sitting around feeling bad for herself (or himself) because no one asked her out? And EVERYONE is single at some point for key portions of their lives… So making single people feel bad is a bad play in my book.
Second, for people who are dating…I think it puts an artificial sense of expectation on them…like you HAVE-TO do something *special.* This pretty much guarantees you will NOT have a particularly special date night…the artificial expectations kill any genuine romance. In other words, Valentines day even ruins things for people who are dating!!
Third, for people who happen to be in romantic bliss, Valentine’s day tends to be a non-event. Real passionate loves do not revolve around a greeting card calendar – lovers have their own special holidays that no one else shares…their own special anniversaries and traditions.
Not to mention – Valentine’s is a totally commercial holiday made up to make you buy flowers and diamonds – but perhaps that’s just a little too cynical…
Anyway, having said that – if you DO like Valentine’s day, just ignore what I said… Don’t let me rain on your day. But for the rest of you who sense a disturbance in the force – read on…
The only ideal scenario for Valentine’s day seems to be if on that particular day you found out someone magnificent, famous and grand, whom you did not know has secretly loved you from afar…and chose that day to quietly, patiently introduce this to you. And hint, perhaps, that because of this love – all your dreams would one day come true…
Well it turns out this bit is true… God has loved you from afar – and knows you better and loves you more fully than any person ever will… And somehow, between all the clumsy motions of church and the clumsy efforts of worship leaders and preachers trying to convey His words – perhaps this Sunday His message will get through…and if you’ll accept it, your dreams really can come true…
