How long does it take?

What I mean is, “how long does it have-to take to get right with God?” It takes some people YEARS and YEARS. For someone else it takes MONTHS. So how long do you think it takes?
I thought about this one morning as I felt a million miles from God. My thoughts had been elsewhere for a while, racked with worry and anger, feeling like a loser, swimming in a vague sense of dread… But I wasn’t at a point where I felt like I had to cry out to God for help either. And part of my dread was knowing how far I had swam out into my spiritual abyss, not knowing exactly how to get back; a part of me wondering, “will I ever get back?”
If you’re in that state, I don’t know how long it will take for you… but I do know how long it has-to take… I mean the minimum amount of time it has to take to get back: from personal experience, and theologically speaking…
A single moment.
In the blink of an eye all can be well. In a heartbeat it can all be done and forgiven…for those who “believe.”
Regular thinking says “I must make amends, I must do the work to restore the relationship – at least half way…” But the Gospel teaching is [a] you cannot, you’re unable, and [b] your Savior has done everything needed to get you back. Jesus’ perfect sacrifice gets you back. And the instant you believe that, your heart is reoriented toward God, and Heaven is all around you. One minute you feel a million miles away, and the next He appears.
I know this won’t make sense to a lot of you – but for some of you this is a divine meeting. Christmas means you don’t go out to the heavens or down to the depths to find God – God comes to find you.
