The problem with positive thinking…

A quick riff on Jesus’ saying, “blessed are those who weep now, for you shall laugh!” One obvious application of this is to say: you can’t be positive all the time. Sometimes it makes sense to laugh, and at other times to cry. This sounds so obvious, I know, and yet people mess this up all the time. To take a good hard look at your situation and to mourn (if necessary) is not bad…because sometimes it’s the thing you need before you can repent and change.
Actually… You’ll never really ever willingly change or repent UNLESS you’re bold enough to take a good honest look at things you don’t want to see… In other types of situations weeping is a part of the healing process… So if you never weep – you’ll never really get to laugh either. Very often, in our broken world, the weeping is part of the way we get to the laughter. This is true in business (positive thinking killed the US Auto Industry, and Investment Banks), it’s true in your relationships (positive thinking by itself will kill your friendships and romance), and it’s true of your spirituality…to tell yourself “all is well” when it’s not will result in catastrophe. But for those who have the integrity to mourn and weep *when necessary*, Jesus says fear not, there is plenty of healing and laughter up ahead!
