Doing something new…

It can be amazingly difficult to do something new. Ever notice how long it seems to take to get somewhere for the first time, compared to how quick it is to get back home? Time and space seems to warp when it comes to new things. New is hard. New is stressful. New is terribly inconvenient. Old things on the other hand are surprisingly easy (even when they’re not!). It’s “easy” to go to the same places you always go, even if you’re miles away and it’s terribly inconvenient. It’s easy to stick with dysfunctional relationships (rather than try to fix it or leave) even when they’re hurting us or holding us back. It’s easy to stick with a job or career or major, even when you can’t seem to find any good reason for it.
Let’s call this Spiritual Inertia. It’s the thing that keeps us from or makes it difficult to do something new. Following God often means trying something new. Meet new people, go new places, do things you would not normally do if it were up to you. That’s what “following” is all about. The way God sees it the old ways may have been “good enough” for you, but they are not the GREAT things God has for you. So the message here is: Don’t let spiritual inertia hold you back! Don’t let it shape your life, your happiness, your future…
…
With this in mind I realize what a miracle it is for anyone who hasn’t gone to church to step into a place like CityFellowship on Sunday. Just getting up on Sunday (when you normally sleep in), getting dressed (when you normally sit around in sweats), and meeting new people (when you usually see the same people everyday) is a million times harder than anything I do all week. It’s actually harder getting to church for the first time than it is for me to help get the church together every week.
But the good news is if you can get that far on your own, I think you’ll find other people who are doing new things too… Who are growing, changing, evolving. It’s a million times easier doing something new when you have friends doing new things with you… Like running in a marathon and following the pack, it’s somehow easier when you’re not pushing forward alone.
