Loving the Butterflies

Most normal people spend their lives avoiding things like this, but the Bible talks about following Jesus “with fear and trembling.” Doing things that scare them. Talking to people they wouldn’t normally talk to, doing things they normally wouldn’t do, opening themselves up to criticism and hurt and embarrassment and overwhelming frustration in ways they normally would not. Why would anyone do this?
This is one of the privileges of following Jesus. Why would someone compete in the Olympics with all that pressure? Why would someone race cars competitively or go to an open mic? Motorcycle racer Keith Code says about racing, that ‘anything that makes you pray before you do it has got to be good…it will either kill you or save you’ (my paraphrase). The people who do these things do it over and over, stress out, and love every minute of it. And after it’s over they would give anything to be able to do it again.
The Bible also talks about fearlessness, so this sounds like it might be a contradiction, but it’s not. Following Jesus with butterflies at hand, praying for “salvation” (a good outcome) is how we get fearless. And if you think about it, all the best and worthwhile things in life seem to come this way…
