The Hardest Things

On a list of difficult tasks – I think I have the zinger of them all. The hardest thing to do is to go to someone and say “I’m sorry” after not speaking to them for some time. Add to that the indignity of being the one who was completely in the wrong. That’s hard. And the longer you wait, the harder it gets… In the past people called this the sulks, or even Achilles Wrath…today it’s so commonplace that we don’t call it anything in particular.
From what I can tell, this is how people often feel toward God. Some people call it “guilt.” Guilt, even though God’s message is about forgiveness. And the longer you avoid it, the harder it becomes. This is why people are often angry with God – a lot of the arguments of “why God does not exist” are really arguments for why we should be mad at God…
The only solution then is to go and reconcile. And God is all about reconciliation. The kind of reconciliation where things are actually better than they were before all this happened. That’s what we do every Sunday, make peace with our Maker and see what he has to say… And in doing so, this winds up helping us make peace with other people, and sometimes become peacemakers ourselves.
Where do we do this reconciliation business? Sunday morning at 11:11 AM, 873 Broadway (bet 18-19th St)…When you get to the front door there will be a sign telling you to buzz #0020 – and when you get to the 4th floor you’ll see more signs pointing you to Room 408. And if you make it – congratulations! You’ve just done something extraordinary!
