The Secret to Everything

Most people think of repentance as a one-shot deal… You screw up, you get busted, you repent, and (hopefully, one-day) all is forgiven. That’s how real life soap operas play out in the news… But Christian repentance is a little different. For one thing it’s not quite painful in the same way. When politicians repent of their scandals in public, they look miserable! When you or I go to God and admit what He’s been trying to tell us all along (that we’re broken), there’s an enormous sense of relief! There’s a sense of freedom and joy, and as we become familiar with the God of the Bible we get a sense of certainty in His forgiveness along with an understanding of how we can actually change.
So Christian repentance is different in a number of ways. But the main way it differs is: Most people think even Christian repentance is a one-shot deal in coming to God, repenting of our former lives… But in the Bible, repentance is something you live with, it’s how you grow. How can that be?
The key to successful race car driving is not just a perfect execution of turns, but the ability to make quick and accurate corrections…constantly. The key to successful management is not just having an excellent system or excellent business plan or strategy, it’s the ability to make the right corrections quickly, adjusting constantly with the changing market environment. The secret to doing math problems is recognizing when a number is wrong and trying another. In other words…the secret to everything is really REPENTANCE… The ability to quickly and accurately put your finger on what is wrong – admit it is wrong, ask for forgiveness (when necessary) and change course. This isn’t something you do every now and again, it’s something you do almost every step of the way…
