A Bible Reading Group

Or an alternate title to this post would be: What I think I want in a Bible study… I’m getting ready for tonight’s Bible study and I’m thinking back to all the Bible studies I’ve been part of in the past. One of the things that I’ve appreciated about Bible studies was it gave me a chance (as a younger Christian) to read things for myself and think out loud about what it might mean… I think the best Bible studies involved a good deal of reading and lively discussion.
Although I’ve used handouts with questions and notes in the past, I think I’ll skip that for now. The main difficulty in Bible reading is reading what it says rather than reading ‘what we think it should say.’ Usually when you read it in the right context it speaks for itself (and notes or pre-written questions can distract us from that). The purpose of a Bible reading group is simply to do this together – so that we don’t get off track, and also to get practice in staying on track ourselves… If a format works out okay it should have thoughtful and lively discussion, and be easy for participants to replicate – to lead their own someday soon.
(About the photo: A picture of “Newsbreaker Live” that I stole from some site… It’s the game in movie theaters where the audience gets to play breakout as human joysticks monitored by motion sensors… That’s kind of what we do in a Bible reading group, only without the popcorn)
