Sundays in the City

I think one of the hardest things I did in my 20′s was…to visit new churches. Living in a big city means there are MANY places one does not belong – and although church meetings are public I could not help but fear that I would not (belong)… But it was also an exercise in “faith” (i.e., operating and believing a proven principle rather than doing/feeling the natural thing).
Here’s what I mean: All who truly seek God are part of God’s family… Therefore when you walk into a church meeting (ANY church meeting), you actually belong whether people know it or not… It’s like going to a premier of a movie and a party afterwards in which the star of the movie is your brother and friend who wants you there…even though you don’t know anyone there, and no one knows you (yet) you belong. It’s like going to a family reunion for a distant side of the family that you’ve never met. Maybe you’ll love them (and they’ll love you), or maybe you’ll find them a little annoying – but either way it’s family – and the one thing you should not feel with family is “out of place.”
So you want to find a church that “fits” (see earlier post), but while you’re looking there’s never a reason to feel out of place – and IF you walk into a place that is not welcoming (which I don’t think will happen), it’s their mistake…Father forgive them, they really don’t know what they do.
Now here’s the part where I tell you where we meet: Sunday mornings @ 11:11 – 873 Broadway (bet 18-19th St)…When you get to the front door there will be a sign telling you to buzz #0020 – and when you get to the 4th floor you’ll see more signs pointing you to Room 408 – that’s us!
(About the photo: That’s Grace, Champ and me on the right. Champ was in town recently and reminded me that he was the first person to randomly walk into a church we were serving at in Queens – here he’s crouching to fit into the frame!)
