How to get the most out of Church
Apr 22nd, 2008 by ljkim
If you’ve been scanning this website you know that “church” is NOT a place, nor is it an “organization…” Rather the church is a living community, a network, or family: God’s family, in a sense, that still has many long lost members… But a church (these days) still needs leaders and employees and stuff like that… What’s their job? What is it that leaders and church professionals need to accomplish exactly?
I believe that the business of church leadership is really “YOU” – developing people… In two ways: [1] in growing a healthy family and [2] developing great individuals.
Just the way at work, sometimes you come across someone with extraordinary abilities – then you find out what school she/he came from and you think “it figures…” (in a positive sense). Because some schools do a good job in attracting and developing people with certain skills… In the same way – the church (as a community) ought to develop great people. So that when people see what kind of person you are – and find out what church you’re part of, how you resemble Jesus (although they might not realize it’s Him you resemble) they can make the connection: “It figures…”
The business of church leadership is not to build great church organizations, or even to build great church leaders, but to help build great people and great communities - the kind of people we always wanted to be (real sinners saved by God’s real grace) – in the kind of communities we always wanted to be part of…
“Sounds great! How can I get the most out of this-church-network-family thing?” There’s a simple formula to how these things work: The more a person is “A” actually interested in God and truth and “B” willing to communicate questions, doubts, and truths (things he/she has learned) with others – then the deeper the friendships become and better all this Jesus-seeking-family stuff works. Because the more we know that’s true about God, the better we know ourselves and grow. The job of church leaders, then, is to be a part of the “A” + “B” thing going on, and to encourage it in others.
